Lori Dengler Talks about the 1992 Cape Mendocino Earthquakes

Tuesday, April 25, 2017

Remember the 1992 Cape Mendocino Earthquakes with Lori Dengler on Tuesday, April 25

Join Humboldt State University’s Dr. Lori Dengler on Tuesday, April 25, at 6 p.m. as she talks about the 1992 magnitude 7.2 earthquake and its aftershocks, how it raised awareness of the Cascadia subduction zone and launched preparedness programs regionally and nationwide. Dengler’s talk at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center at 569 South G Street is free and open to the entire community.

Dr. Lori Dengler is an emeritus Professor of Geology at Humboldt State University. She was part of the team that developed the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program and has participated in a dozen post-earthquake and tsunami field survey teams in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Chile and Japan. Recognized as HSU's Scholar of the Year in 2008 and recipient of California's 2009 Alquist medal for earthquake preparedness efforts, Dengler continues her research work. She is the author of a biweekly column in The Eureka Times-Standard and a bilingual children's book "The Extraordinary Voyage of Kamome,"a story about the Japanese boat that washed ashore in Crescent City in 2013, and the friendships it forged between students in two tsunami-vulnerable communities on opposite sides of the Pacific. Copies of this book will be available for autographing and sale after Dengler’s talk.

Seating is limited to 65 people so call to reserve a place at 707-826-2359 or email AMIC@cityofarcata.org.
